Dr Jones has 50 years of experience in teaching and research in academia and industry. He was trained in the UK (Liverpool) and in USA (Wisconsin) and was a Professor at U of Toronto and Scientist at Hospital for Sick Children before moving to Queen’s University in 1984. He served as Craine Professor of Biochemistry and Department Head (2002-2011). His research interests focus on the biochemistry and pharmacology of vitamins D & A; and their clinical applications. Dr Jones is also interested in the Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of small molecules (metabolomics). He has been continuously funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) for the past four decades. With over 290 career journal publications, his work has defined the mechanisms by which vitamins A & D are broken down in the body by cytochrome P450-containing enzymes. Dr Jones was a co-founder of Cytochroma Inc. and was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board member of OPKO-Renal, a Miami-based company developing drugs for renal disease. Dr Jones is the current chair of the advisory board of DEQAS, the global external quality assurance scheme that monitors vitamin D assays and analysts. In 2009-2011, he was a member of the US/Canada-sponsored IOM committee setting nutritional guidelines for vitamin D and calcium. In 2014, Dr Jones received the Excellence in Research Award from Queen’s University and in 2019 was made a Distinguished University Professor by Queen’s University.
